The knowledge base of this discipline is broad. Competitive intelligence is a practice concerned with using freely available and legal sources of information to help learn about the activities and organization of corporations and other entities. In this course we focus on using free, online information sources, and we will focus our attention on companies whose shares trade publicly on U.S. stock exchanges.

BUSI 4923 - Online Competitive Intelligence for Organization Theory

Organization Theory is a discipline concerned with helping us to understand why companies and organizations look and behave as they do and what success or failure means. To some extent, it is a discipline of competing and complimentary theories, each seeking to explain large scale organized behaviour through a different lens. This course will introduce you to a number of them, including Agency Theory, the Resource-Based Theory of the Firm, Institutional Theory, Resource Dependence Theory, and Stakeholder Theory. Two overarching objectives of this course are to introduce you to a number of different theories of organization as well as a number of different and critical online information sources. An additional objective is provide a series of learning exercises that will help you apply these online information sources and theories to a real life business or management example. COMP 2203 - Computer Architecture and Organization 1

The course provides an introduction to the hardware principles that are necessary for the understanding of the operation of computers and other digital circuits that are the subject of COMP 2213. Although it does not go into enough depth to make you an expert digital designer, it provides experience with paper-and-pencil methods and access to powerful CAD (Computer-Aided Design) software packages used by professional designers to construct complicated circuits. The software is provided with the book and explained in the last chapter; its use is not a requirement for the course. The course consists of eight lessons corresponding to the first six chapters of the main text and a chapter each from the supplementary texts. Each chapter is followed by a number of exercises, requiring either a written answer or a diagram.

COMP 2213 - Computer Architecture and Organization 2

Level of learning This course is about the operation of a computer with emphasis on hardware principles, implementation strategies, and operational principles. It starts with an overview of the evolution of computers, discusses several approaches to computer instruction sets, the structure of a typical CPU and its internal design, the hierarchy of the memory system and the reasons why memory has several levels, the ways in which computer systems access input and output devices, and the principles of input-output devices themselves. Why is this course important? The obvious reason why future computer professionals need this course is that they should know what makes computers tick. Another reason is that they may need to know how to interface other devices to computers and this requires understanding of Computer Architecture. Finally, several fundamental Computer Science courses, such as operating systems, compilers, programming languages, and networking, depend on the understanding of the interaction between software and hardware. Without understanding Computer Architecture, topics such as memory management, code generation, and device drivers are meaningless.

Prerequisites: This is a second-year university level course for students majoring in Computer Science. It assumes knowledge of digital systems and machine level representation of data as presented in COMP 2203 and summarized in Appendix A of the textbook.

EDUC 4673 - Teaching English as a Second Language

This course will provide you with the basic skills required to plan and teach ESL classes in a variety of contexts. Online components, including readings, short lectures and discussion forums, will be combined with hands-on workshops which will introduce you to a range of teaching methods and enable you to analyze and develop course materials.

EDUC 4683 - Linguistics for Teachers 1

This course introduces students to the study of linguistics, and investigates why it would be relevant to the teaching of English as a second language. Students will be introduced to the fundamentals of the sound system in English (phonetics and phonology), the way that meaningful units in the language combine to form words (morphology), the sentence system (syntax), the elements of grammar that are relevant in the ESL classroom (pedagogical grammar), the role of language in society (sociolinguistics), and the use of language in communicative situations (discourse analysis). Prospective teachers will be made aware of the pedagogical implications of the structural and social aspects of language.

This course is foundational. The focus is on how language is acquired. There will be a sociological and a psychological analysis of language acquisition. Semantics, syntax, phonology and pragmatics will be explored. This course is required in the TESOL Certificate program offered through Open Acadia.

EDUC 5033 - Theories of Counselling

This course is an introduction to the field of counselling. An overview of the philosophical foundation and historical bases of the counselling profession will be provided as well as an examination of current issues and future trends. A significant portion of the course is devoted to the study of the major theories of counselling. Specific issues such as crisis counselling and counselling with special populations are also addressed.

Prerequisites: Enrollment is restricted to those fully admitted to the Master of Education in Counselling Degree Program at Acadia University

EDUC 5066 - Seminar and Practicum in Counselling

This course involves a counselling practicum in an appropriate setting. Placements are chosen in consultation with the instructor. Students are expected to complete 100 hours of intensive supervised practice followed by 400 hours of continued practicum. The practicum is completed in a block format, normally four days a week for 16 weeks. A seminar accompanies the practicum. Students are responsible for arranging their own practicum in consultation with counselling faculty.

Prerequisites: All core counselling courses completed or taken concurrently and admission to the counselling program.

EDUC 5073 - Curriculum and Instruction for Inclusive Education

This course examines inclusive curriculum and instructional practices that will assist teachers in meeting students' diverse learning needs in educational settings. Students will explore and critique relevant research related to inclusive school communities as well as issues around equitable assessment and instructional practices.
