MED Curriculum Studies – 30h
The Curriculum Studies program is designed for teachers and administrators who wish to engage in research and advanced study in curriculum. In addition to the General Program, concentrations in Science, Math, and Technology and Learning and Technology are available. The curriculum studies program also offers occasional cohorts in specialized areas such as interprofessional health practice, music education, and creativity in education.
This program for educators aims to:
- Explore aspects of curriculum studies;
- Challenge dominant discourses of democratic action, empowerment, and change;
- Focus on equity and social justice within diverse cultural frameworks;
- Investigate current curriculum theory and practice from an interdisciplinary perspective.
Students may follow a general program or a concentration in one of the following:
- General Program
- Science, Math, and Technology — This program is designed for teachers at any grade level with an interest in mathematics, or science teaching in the context of a society that has been transformed by technology.
- Learning and Technology — This program focuses on the application of information and communication technologies to teaching and learning in schools and other educational contexts. The emphasis of the program is on gaining an appreciation of the potential that technology holds for education as well as a critical understanding of the impact and implications of its application.
Specialized Cohorts:
- Health Interprofessionals — This program is designed for educators and administrators from health fields who wish to explore classic and contemporary theory and research in curriculum studies. The program and courses are designed to enhance your teaching, planning and course delivery as well as your understanding of the theoretical frameworks within which educational programming has been understood.
- Music Education — This program provides teachers with opportunities to learn and share experiences with colleagues in courses that offer both theoretical grounding and practical application.
- Creativity — This program is designed to engage teachers and other educators in contemporary thinking that positions creativity at the center of curriculum.

Note: For the courses 5053, 5153, and 5673 the focus of the course is required to be in the student’s concentration area.
Non-thesis students may substitute EDUC 50G3 – Research Literacy for EDUC 5513 – Research Design as their required research course.
Program Electives – Program electives are selected from graduate course offered by the School of Education or from approved graduate courses offered by other departments or schools.
