Course Description

This course will provide you with the basic skills required to plan and teach ESL classes in a variety of contexts. Online components, including readings, short lectures and discussion forums, will be combined with hands-on workshops which will introduce you to a range of teaching methods and enable you to analyse and develop course materials.

By the end of the course you will be able to…

  1. Critique and compare approaches to TESOL
  2. Discuss the main considerations, including classroom management, when teaching reading, writing, speaking, listening, grammar, pronunciation, and lexis
  3. Analyze existing TESOL classroom materials and create your own
  4. Discuss professional practice and development.
  5. Plan, prepare to teach and evaluate an ESL class.

Instructor

Fiona Inglis has many years of experience teaching ESL, EFL and EAP. She has an MA in Applied Linguistics and TESOL. After teaching in a variety of contexts in language schools in Canada, the U.K. and Japan, she came to Acadia in 2002 and worked in the pre-sessional language programs. Since 2006, she has been teaching credit courses in Teaching English as a Second Language, and an undergraduate composition course for non-native English speaking university students. Fiona is currently the ESL Writing Specialist at the Acadia Writing Centre. Fiona teaches the Teaching English as a Second Language course.
