Practicum
Course DescriptionThe purpose of the Acadia TESOL Certificate Program Practicum is to provide participants with the opportunity to put theory presented in the courses into practice in an English language classroom. It may be completed on-site at Acadia University or in a partner institution abroad. The practicum consists of 10 hours of directed observation and 10 hours of supervised teaching in an adult EAP/ESL classroom. The practicum must be completed in order to achieve TESL Canada certification. Pre-requisites: In order to enrol in the Acadia TESOL Certificate Program Practicum, you must also have taken EDUC 4673, 4683 and 4863 as pre- or co-requisites. On-Site Practicum
There will be a limited number of practicum placements available on-campus with Acadia's EAP program, teaching pre-sessional EAP students. We can also arrange for you to complete this practicum at a nearby partner school. Cost: $250 Practicums are offered once a week Monday to Thursday 12:30-2:30 or 2:30-4:30. When you enroll in your practicum, you will be asked to sign up for one of these times. You must attend all five practicum classes in your 5-week session. Check here for specific practicum session dates.
Off-Site PracticumYou can also choose to complete your practicum off site. If you plan to work abroad, and you have a position set up, or if you have a volunteer class that you can teach in order to be observed, you may wish to choose this option. If this option is selected, a Practicum Supervisor would be identified by you, and approved by the TESOL certificate coordinator. Practicum Supervisors would be provided with a course package outlining their responsibilities, assignments, and the assessment required for completion of the practicum. Bachelor of Education students can choose to complete their practicum as part of their international teaching placement. Cost: $200 |
