Scholarships and Financial Assistance

Several local and national organizations offer scholarships applicable to distance or adult learners. A small selection of awards are listed below:

Mary Cone Barrie Scholarship

Destiny Solutions offers two $2,500 awards in tribute to the University of Toronto's Dr. Mary Cone Barrie.  The award is available for students studying in a non-traditional learning environment (ex. enrolled in online courses) who are improving their lives through continuing education.  The deadline for the 2014 award is August 29: please visit the Destiny Solutions award website for the application form and additional information.

APACUE Joyce Kennedy Adult Learner Award

APACUE, the Atlantic Provinces Association for Continuing University Education, presents two $750 scholarships for adult learners enrolled full- or part-time in a university credit program.  Awards are assessed based on academic achievement, family considerations (including financial need), community contributions, and long-term goals.  As nominations for this award must be submitted by a university's continuing education department, students interested in the award should contact Open Acadia for assistance in their application.  The annual deadline is October 31.

Nova Scotia Criminal Justice Association

The NS Criminal Justice Association provides a $500.00 cash award to a student (either part or full time) enrolled in a Social Science program with a focus on Social Justice. The deadline is January 31.
